2015-36 – Biosecurity Regulation and Reform Branch – Agricultural Export Regulation Review

17 July 2015

Who does this notice affect?

This notice applies to agricultural export industries.

Information

The Department of Agriculture is reviewing agricultural export regulation.

Agricultural export regulation governs the export of agricultural goods and is made up of a number of Acts, including the Export Control Act 1982 and the Australian Meat and Live-stock Industry Act 1997, and supporting legislative instruments (regulations, commodity specific orders and declarations).

The objective is to review agricultural export regulation and recommend improvements to make sure we have regulation that:

  • supports agricultural exporters to quickly access and utilise market opportunities now and into the future
  • imposes an appropriate regulatory burden to assure importing countries of the integrity of our agricultural products without stifling innovation
  • facilitates cooperation in export activities between government and industry so we can work together to efficiently manage risks.

Consultation is being undertaken from now until 21 September 2015 and a series of discussion groups will be held around Australia to discuss stakeholder views on what works/doesn’t work as part of agricultural export regulation. As part of this, a discussion paper on agricultural export regulation has been developed and released to prompt ideas and conversation. A copy of the discussion paper is available at Agricultural Export Regulation Review

Comments and submissions are encouraged from any participant in the agricultural export supply chain or any other interested stakeholders.

Following consultation, stakeholder feedback will be consolidated and considered in forming any recommendations to improve agricultural export regulation and will be presented to the Australian Government for consideration and agreement.

Further information

Further information will be released as the review progresses.
