Lumpy Skin Disease Vector Management Guide

Completed in June 2024, this guide was created to assist producers manage insect vector populations that can spread lumpy skin disease (LSD). We contracted Ausvet Pty Ltd to develop the guide, addressing an activity in the National Lumpy Skin Disease Action Plan, to investigate vector control options. The work was conducted with the help of the state and territory experts and the Centre for Biosecurity Risk Analysis (CEBRA).

The guide describes vector control options to assist during an LSD outbreak. The information may be used by governments as part of their disease response planning.

The guide is relevant to insects that can spread LSD in Australia. It outlines ways to manage them across different cattle farming systems, focusing on integrated pest management. Using vector control methods with other response measures could assist in reducing disease spread. However, the impact of insect control measures on LSD spread in Australia is still unknown. More research is needed to answer key questions, and these uncertainties are discussed in the guide.
