We have released the draft report Inclusion of avian materials in aquaculture feed for public consultation. This is an addendum to the final report for the Assessment of a prescribed heat treatment as a risk management measure for fish and fish products for use as pet food and stockfeed
Steps to complete this risk analysis
When we do a risk analysis, we:
- start by reviewing the evidence on pests and diseases of concern
- assess and analyse biosecurity risks
- develop proposed risk management measures if required
- consult the public on the draft report and then review comments
- publish the final report
- develop import conditions
- publish import conditions in our Biosecurity Import Conditions System (BICON).
About this review
This risk review was initiated in response to a request from the aquaculture feed industry. It considers the level of biosecurity risk associated with imported aquaculture feed that contains avian material. It considers current scientific information, industry practices and operational practicalities.
The review considered 3 common groups of aquaculture feed product:
- granulated hatchery feed
- extruded pelletised hatchery and grow-out feed
- soft tuna feed.
The review recommends the application of an additional heat treatment step to manage the level of biosecurity risk for this commodity.
