On 15 July 2025, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry released the draft report on biosecurity import requirements for guava fruit from Taiwan. Public consultation is open for 60 days via the Have Your Say platform, closing 13 September 2025.
Shortly after releasing the draft report, we learned of a new detection of Austropuccinia psidii (myrtle rust) in Taiwan, published in a scientific journal on 3 July 2025. We have contacted Taiwan’s National Plant Protection Organisation for further information and clarification on this detection.
Next Steps:
- Given the biosecurity significance of myrtle rust, the department will undertake an additional pest risk assessment (PRA) for myrtle rust on guava fruit from Taiwan.
- This additional PRA will be subject to a separate public consultation process.
- Feedback received on both the draft report and the additional PRA will be considered in preparing the final report for fresh guava fruit from Taiwan.
- We expect to release the additional PRA for myrtle rust in early 2026.
How You Can Contribute:
- We encourage all interested stakeholders to review the draft report and provide feedback via the Have Your Say platform by 13 September 2025.
- Once the additional PRA for myrtle rust is released, stakeholders will be invited to participate in a consultation process for that assessment.
- To receive timely updates and notifications about this and other plant biosecurity risk analyses, you can subscribe to ‘Biosecurity Risk Analysis Plant’ via our online subscription service.
