The Director of Biosecurity has suspended imports of fresh whole pomelo fruit grown or produced in Vietnam. This suspension will be in place for an initial period of 6 months
Effective from 12:01am AEST on 15 September 2026, imports of fresh whole pomelo fruit grown or produced in Vietnam will no longer be permitted.
We finalised the risk analysis for fresh pomelo fruit from Vietnam on 29 April 2025 (Biosecurity Advice 2025-P01). We then worked with Vietnam to verify they could meet these requirements. In April 2026, we published import conditions for fresh pomelo fruit from Vietnam on our Biosecurity Import Conditions system (BICON). This signified that trade could commence.
Through our assurance and verification activities, we have concluded that the biosecurity risks associated with importing fresh pomelo fruit from Vietnam are not being managed effectively to meet Australia’s appropriate level of protection (ALOP).
The Director of Biosecurity has suspended imports of fresh whole pomelo fruit grown or produced in Vietnam. This suspension will be in place for an initial period of 6 months.
To formalise this suspension, the Director of Biosecurity made a Biosecurity (Suspended Goods – Pomelos from Vietnam) Determination 2026 under subsection 182(1) of the Biosecurity Act 2015. This came into effect on 15 September 2026.
This suspension will remain in place until the department is satisfied that the biosecurity risk can be managed in a manner consistent with Australia's appropriate level of protection (ALOP).
Consignments that were certified for export before the suspension came into effect will be managed in accordance with Australia’s biosecurity requirements, including inspection on arrival. Where necessary, remedial action will be applied in accordance with biosecurity requirements. Pomelo consignments that are certified on or after the date of suspension will not be permitted entry into Australia while the suspension remains in place.
