Biosecurity Advice 2026-P10: Commencement of a review of biosecurity import requirements for fresh aehobak (Korean summer squash) from Republic of Korea

22 September 2026

We have commenced a review of biosecurity import requirements for fresh aehobak (Korean summer squash) for human consumption from the Republic of Korea.

We expect to release the draft report for public consultation in the second half of 2027.

We are commencing this risk analysis in response to a market access request for fresh aehobak from Korea.

A preliminary assessment of the pests associated with aehobak from Korea has identified that the potential pests of biosecurity concern are the same, or of the same pest groups as those we have previously assessed on horticultural goods, and for which risk management measures exist. These pests include fruit flies, spider mites, thrips, and pathogens.

As a result, the risk analysis for aehobak from Korea is being progressed as a review of biosecurity import requirements. This is consistent with the Biosecurity Act 2015 and the Biosecurity Import Risk Analysis Guidelines 2026.

Further information on this risk analysis can be found on our webpage.

We expect to release a draft report for public consultation in the second half of 2027. We will issue another Biosecurity Advice to invite comment at that time. We will consider all stakeholder comments received during the consultation period in preparing the final report.

We invite stakeholders to contribute scientific information relevant to this risk analysis at any time by emailing plantstakeholders@aff.gov.au.

We encourage stakeholders interested in receiving updates on biosecurity risk analyses to subscribe via our online subscription service. By subscribing to ‘Biosecurity Risk Analysis Plant’, you will receive Biosecurity Advices and other notifications relating to plant biosecurity policy, including this risk analysis.
