Rock lobster/ giant crab fishery notification—biotoxin closure (2017-15)

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (the department) has been advised by the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and the Environment (DPIPWE), Tasmania, that rock lobster analysis results from Central East Zone, Maria Island Zone and Lower East Coast Zone have returned paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) results above regulatory levels. These areas will not open as scheduled for the commencement of the rock lobster fishery on 18 November 2017.

Four zones will open as scheduled on 27 November 2017 when the Eastern region commercial rock lobster / giant crab fishery opens:

  • Furneaux Zone
  • North East Zone
  • Upper East Zone
  • Storm Bay Bruny Zone

Direction to export registered establishments and exporters

The department issues this direction under order 75 of the Export Control (Fish and Fish products) Orders 2005.

To support the export of Tasmanian caught rock lobster and rock lobster products / giant crab and giant crab products that are sourced from areas that are open for fishing, the statement:

‘This rock lobster/rock lobster product or giant crab/ giant crab product has been prepared from rock lobster / giant crab that has been sourced from an open fisheries area’

must be included on all Declarations of Compliance for all Tasmanian caught rock lobster and rock lobster products or giant crab and giant crab products.
