The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry develops policies to allow for the safe importation of animals, their genetic material and other animal products.
These policies are based on biosecurity risk analyses completed by the department. These analyses consider the biosecurity risk associated with the importation of animals and animal products taking into account Australia’s international obligations.

We are responsible for assessing the biosecurity risks associated with the import of a range of goods from overseas.
We conduct import risk analyses in response to new information about biosecurity risks or to an import request.
Our Biosecurity Innovation Program (BIP) funds innovative ideas to enhance our biosecurity system.
The BIP invests in new technologies and approaches. It identifies and develops new products and services to manage biosecurity challenges and risks.
Through the BIP we:
On 8 March 2018, our department held the first Biosecurity Innovation Exchange event, bringing innovators together to enhance our national biosecurity system to meet future challenges.
Biosecurity research and innovation enhances our work to prevent, predict, identify and respond to biosecurity threats.
Programs such as the Biosecurity Innovation Program (BIP) and Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis (CEBRA) test and develop new ideas and technologies. They also support our risk-based approach to biosecurity regulation with research and risk analysis tools.
