The Australian Export Meat Inspection System (AEMIS) is an integrated set of controls specified and verified by the government that ensure the safety, suitability and integrity of Australian meat and meat products. Underpinning AEMIS are objective hygiene and performance standards that are continually monitored.

A departmental On Plant Veterinarian (OPV) is responsible for ante-mortem inspection and verification of post-mortem inspection and processor hygiene practices.

Meat Hygiene Assessment (MHA)

Meat Hygiene Assessment describes​ the application of two monitoring systems - the first relates to process controls in the production of the meat and the second to the physical condition of meat. Both systems utilise standardised methods to assure consistency in the outputs from monitoring and to provide an objective approach to assessing meat hygiene.​

Meat export licence

Individuals, partnerships and companies exporting edible meat, offal (including casings) or meat products of cattle, sheep or goats must be licensed under the Export Control Act 2020.

A licence to export meat issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry grants an exporter permission to conduct a specific export transaction. It is the responsibility of each exporter to determine the end use of the product being exported and whether a meat export licence is required.

Meat commodity export permit requirements

This page outlines the export permit requirements for Australian meat and meat products and should be read in conjunction with the export legislation.

An export permit is required for prescribed goods intended for export in accordance with the Export Control Act 2020.

The primary function of an export permit is to verify that product is eligible for export to the intended destination of import. The Australian Border Force requires an export permit before issuing export clearance for prescribed goods.

List of recognised Islamic bodies for halal certification of red meat

The following Islamic organisations have an Approved Arrangement with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry for the certification of halal red meat and red meat products for export and are considered an Approved Islamic Organisation (AIO). The following table identifies the international markets for which the AIOs are listed as recognised certifying bodies by the respective competent authorities, enabling them to certify for those markets.
