Importation of zoo hippopotamuses and their semen from approved countries – final report

On 24 April 2024 the department issued Biosecurity Advice 2024-A06 inviting comments on the draft review of biosecurity risks associated with importing zoo hippopotamuses and their semen from approved countries. The report was open for a 60-day consultation period and closed on 24 June 2024.

285-2024: Containerised inorganic fertiliser for further processing pathway now open

Who does this notice affect?

This notice affects importers of inorganic fertiliser into Australia for further processing.

What has changed?

The department has added an import pathway that allows importers to bring in containerised inorganic fertiliser for further processing.

Previously the only pathway for inorganic fertiliser to arrive in Australia for further processing was as a bulk commodity in vessel.

Who does this notice affect?

All vessel owners, operators, masters and shipping agents who represent international commercial and cruise vessels arriving in Australian territory.

What has changed?

Currently all waste discharged from international vessels is managed as biosecurity waste and subject to disposal under a DAFF Approved Arrangement for biosecurity waste management.

From 1 December 2024, commercial and cruise vessel operators can volunteer to participate in the DAFF Maritime Waste Recycling Pilot (DMWRP).
