Episode: November 2025
Presenters:
- Adam Slipinski, Senior Principal Scientist
- and Living Li, Post Doctoral research fellow Australian National Insect Collection, CSIRO
Summary:
In this webinar Adam and Living talk about their research into the beetle groups Bostrichidae and Ptinidae (Anobiinae), commonly known as the auger and furniture beetles, which are important destructive agents of fresh and seasoned timbers. These beetles can attack both sap and heart wood of soft timber, causing serious damage through wood-boring and tunnelling. Some are serious pests of stored food products, causing severe economic losses worldwide. They constitute a critical invasive group, demonstrated by high representation in non-native establishments and border interceptions.
The research will improve our native biodiversity knowledge and provide diagnostic entomologists with new resources for efficient species monitoring for Australian biosecurity activities.
