Australia is setting its sights on COP31 following attendance at the 64th session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB64) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Parties from across the world convened in Bonn, Germany, to engage in climate negotiations ahead of COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, in November 2026. During SB64, DAFF’s delegation contributed to agricultural negotiations under the ‘Sharm el Sheikh joint work on implementation of climate action on agriculture and food security’. This included a workshop on the challenges and opportunities to accessing means of implementation including through finance, technology, and capacity building.
It was a privilege to have COP31 Presidency Youth Climate Champion—and Queensland farmer—Sally Higgins supporting discussions.
"It was great to have Sally in the room spotlighting the voices of youth in agriculture. She facilitated an important discussion on the challenges women and young people face globally when trying to access climate finance for agriculture, and areas for improvement,” said Christina Munzer, DAFF delegate and Director of International Climate.
The delegation also attended the launch of Türkiye’s Turquoise Nexus Initiative, one of its COP31 Action Agenda items. The initiative focuses on the interlinkages of food, water and climate under their food security thematic priority. It will sit within the Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation (FAST) Partnership, which Australia proudly joined as its 50th member at SB64. Our FAST membership will allow us to play a more active role in supporting the sustainable transformation of agriculture and food systems and continue to share Australia’s policy and science expertise on a global stage.
We look forward to highlighting agriculture’s contribution to global climate targets and sharing Australia’s approach to sustainable, climate-smart agriculture in the lead up to COP31.
