The Australian Government has unveiled its Net Zero Plan, which sets out how the nation will achieve a fair, orderly and efficient transition to net zero.
The Agriculture and Land Sector Plan is one of six sectoral emissions reduction plans underpinning the Net Zero Plan.
The sector plan shows how agriculture can contribute to national emissions reduction goals, while supporting Australian producers to remain leaders in low-emissions food and fibre. Action will deliver benefits for regional communities, with opportunities to increase agricultural productivity, carbon storage and nature repair.
The Agriculture and Land Sector Plan identifies four foundational areas to guide effort and investment:
- Improved understanding of business and sector emissions
- Supporting innovation to increase the availability of commercially viable abatement options for producers
- Strengthening on-ground action
- Enhancing the role of land in a net zero economy.
The Australian Government is already investing across these areas, including:
- $60.8 million to support emissions reduction efforts in agriculture and land
- $87 million to establish the Zero Net Emissions Agriculture Cooperative Research Centre
- An additional $1 billion for the Regional Investment Corporation, broadening loan scope to include assistance for improving climate resilience, boosting productivity and supporting agriculture to be part of the net zero transition.
