Veterinarians working on the land in rural and regional areas do a lot more than treat individual animals. They are also one of Australia’s frontline defences against exotic diseases that could seriously harm our agriculture, economy and communities.

Being able to recognise, diagnose and control the spread of emergency animal diseases (EADs) is a crucial skill and requires a robust knowledge of the signs and symptoms of these diseases.

We have released an updated version of our field guide on EADs, a valuable tool for all veterinarians who work with livestock.

The guide contains comprehensive and easily accessible information and images on 37 EADs. It is designed to provide quick help with diagnosing disease and taking action to stop its spread.

Since the previous edition in 2019, we have added new chapters on emerging biosecurity threats that could present a danger to Australia’s production animals.

The guide was produced by veterinary and laboratory experts in collaboration with CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness. It complements the Australian Veterinary Emergency Plan (AUSVETPLAN), Australia’s coordinated national response plan for controlling and eradicating EADs.

If you are a vet working with livestock, you may one day need to take action to stop the spread of an EAD. Your knowledge and vigilance can help protect our herds, our agricultural industries and our communities.
