Australia’s newest international airport, Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI), officially opened its cargo precinct and commenced cargo operations on 27 July 2026, marking a significant milestone for Australia’s aviation logistics, trade and biosecurity systems.
The opening of WSI provides 33% additional capacity to Australia’s aviation sector to support growth in trade while helping maintain Australia’s global competitiveness and economic resilience.
Australia has one of the strongest biosecurity systems in the world to protect our farmers, our environment, our economy and our way of life. The commencement of cargo operations at WSI demonstrates how modern infrastructure, skilled personnel and strong partnerships work together to support those protections while keeping trade moving.
Pressing ‘go’ on cargo operations at WSI is the culmination of years of planning and collaboration between the department, WSI, industry partners and other Commonwealth agencies to ensure the airport is operationally ready from day one. This work included securing the airport’s First Point of Entry determination and establishing the workforce, systems and operating model needed to deliver essential biosecurity and export regulatory services.
The department continually monitors biosecurity risks at Australia's borders and investments in contemporary infrastructure and common-use technology at WSI strengthens Australia’s border risk control measures and streamline supply chain movement.
Biosecurity is a shared responsibility. Australians can be confident that strong systems, skilled people and significant investment are in place to manage risks and protect our country now and into the future.
