Agricultural emissions inhibitors (AEIs) including methane and nitrification inhibitors, can help reduce agricultural emissions. Interest in these products is growing in Australia and internationally.
International regulators are beginning to include some of these products in agricultural, veterinary and feed additive regulations.
In Australia, we are considering how AEIs could support broader environmental and sustainability goals. To do this, we need to understand how current regulatory frameworks apply, and if they remain fit-for-purpose.
We have prepared a discussion paper which outlines potential approaches for regulating methane- and nitrification-inhibiting products.
The discussion paper is open for consultation until 5 pm (AEST) on Wednesday 1 July 2026.
