Compliance and enforcement

We are responsible for ensuring compliance with Australia’s illegal logging laws. Our goal is to help you comply with the laws by educating you on your responsibilities.

However, significant penalties can apply if you:

  • import or process timber products that have come from illegally logged sources
  • breach your due diligence requirements

Our Compliance Plan 2018 explains our approach to ensuring compliance with the laws.

Compliance Audits

We perform regular audits to assess compliance with due diligence requirements.

If you are chosen for an audit, we will send you a Request for Information Notice.

This will ask you for:

  • Information about your due diligence system.
  • How you applied your system to a particular timber product or load of raw logs (as chosen by us).

We will then give feedback on whether your due diligence practices meet the illegal logging law’s requirements. If improvements are required, we will also provide you with information and guidance to assist you with your future compliance.

You need to provide the requested information by the date on the Request for Information Notice.
