Pig Meat

We completed an import risk assessment (IRA) for pig meat in 2004.

Steps to complete this risk analysis

When we do a risk analysis, we:

  • start the risk analysis by reviewing the science on pests and diseases of concern
  • assess and analyse biosecurity risks
  • develop proposed risk management measures
  • consult the public on the draft report and then review comments
  • publish a final report
  • develop import conditions
  • publish import conditions in our Biosecurity Import Conditions System (BICON)

In 2006 Biosecurity Australia published a Scientific Expert Group review of post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). This review concluded that the level of risk of PWMS had not changed since the 2004 IRA and the measures recommended in the IRA continued to address this risk.

Check current conditions for importing pig meat in BICON.

Register in BICON to receive an alert if the conditions change.

About the 2004 IRA

The 2004 IRA recommended that the import of pig meat be allowed subject to certain conditions. All imports must meet the agreed biosecurity import conditions.

The final report details:

  • diseases of biosecurity concern
  • risk assessments for the identified diseases
  • recommended risk management measures.

Diseases

The final report names diseases that need risk management measures.  These are:

  • foot-and-mouth disease virus
  • African swine fever virus
  • classical swine fever virus
  • rinderpest virus
  • swine vesicular disease virus
  • Aujeszky’s disease virus
  • porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus
  • Trichinellosis (Trichinella spiralis)
  • Nipah virus
  • post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome

Risk management measures

In summary, risk management measures include:

  • country, zone or herd freedom
  • premises freedom
  • veterinary inspection
  • carcass testing
  • cooking, freezing, curing or canning
  • carcass modification – removal of head, neck, bones and major lymph nodes.
