Indian Ocean Territories of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Biosecurity conditions apply to all commodities imported into Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Island under the Biosecurity Act 2015 and subordinate legislation.

Prior to importing goods into the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT), please refer to the relevant subordinate legislation below to determine import conditions specific to each commodity including:

Tomato potato psyllid import conditions for fresh solanaceous produce purchased in Western Australia

Import conditions for fresh solanaceous fruit and vegetables purchased in Western Australia and imported into the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands have changed.

The department has implemented new conditions that only apply to the following fresh fruit and vegetables for human consumption:

Who does this notice affect?

This notice is of interest to importers of uncooked prawns and associated industry participants and retailers.

What has changed?

This notice is to inform industry that the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment is changing the import requirements for uncooked prawns from approved countries.

Who does this notice affect?

Importers and brokers of:

  • Fresh table grapes imported for human consumption, from the United States of America

What has changed?

The department is incorporating fresh table grapes from the USA onto the Compliance Based Intervention Scheme (CBIS). This change is scheduled to take effect on Friday 15 May 2020.

Indonesian feed grains quota

The Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) entered into force on 5 July 2020. The agreement put in place reduced tariffs for exports of feed grains.

Eligible feed grains under IA-CEPA are:

  • wheat and meslin (not fit for human consumption)
  • barley (other than seed)
  • grain sorghum (other than seed)

Key dates

The quota year runs in line with the calendar year.

Purpose

This Industry Advice Notice (IAN) is to advise that the Indian Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) has approved phosphine fumigation as an additional treatment option to the current mandatory methyl bromide fumigation for Australian barley exported to India.
