In 1992, the Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments joined forces to work towards a shared vision of Australia's forests.
Five Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) are in place in three Australian states.
The social assessment process for the RFAs was a major development in land management policy that attracted international interest.
The signed RFAs boost the process of continuous improvement in forest use and management in Australia.
They have identified better ways of managing our forests.
Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) safeguard biodiversity, old-growth forests, wilderness and other natural and cultural values. They achieve this through the Comprehensive Adequate and Representative (CAR) reserve system and through ecologically sustainable forest management outside of reserves.
This attachment details Commonwealth environmental and heritage obligations in relation to forests. The procedures and requirements outlined should be read in conjunction with the model regional forest agreement process described in the body of the paper.
