The National Plantation Inventory (NPI) collects data and reports on plantations established primarily for timber production in Australia. It has been doing this since 1993. NPI reports are prepared and published by ABARES.

Sustainable forest management is an adaptive process, and assessing and reporting on sustainability evolves as data availability and knowledge of forest management improves. Recognising this, a major review of Australia's Sustainable Forest Management Framework of Criteria and Indicators was conducted in 2006 before the production of Australia's State of the Forest Report 2008.
