Forest species and ecological communities

Publication date: October 2024

This data workbook contains lists of species of fauna and flora identified as forest-dwelling, and lists of forest-dwelling threatened species and threatened forest ecological communities, including listing status and threat categories where applicable. The lists were compiled for Australia's State of the Forests Report.

Forest-dwelling species are those species that may use forest habitat for all or part of their lifecycles.

Threatened forest ecological communities are forest communities or contain significant proportions of forest listed under the Environment and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

More information on Australia's forest species and ecological communities is reported in Australia's State of the Forests Report at:

  • Indicator 1.2a Forest dwelling species for which ecological information is available
  • Indicator 1.2b The status of forest dwelling species at risk of not maintaining viable breeding populations, as determined by legislation or scientific assessment
  • Indicator 1.2c Representative species from a range of habitats monitored at scales relevant to regional forest management
  • Indicator 1.3a Forest associated species at risk from isolation and the loss of genetic variation, and conservation efforts for those species
  • Indicator 1.3b Native forest and plantations of indigenous timber species which have genetic resource conservation mechanisms in place
