The National statement on First Nations in agriculture, fisheries and forestry is a joint commitment by its signatories to strengthen First Nations economic participation across the sector.
It sets a shared direction for governments, industry and First Nations stakeholders, built around six priority areas that guide this vision.
The vision is for a productive, competitive and sustainable sector that recognises First Nations peoples as land and water managers, decision makers, business owners, workers and innovators.
Strengthening First Nations participation benefits everyone. It supports Australia’s food security, boosts productivity and competitiveness, creates new market opportunities and delivers positive environmental, cultural and social outcomes.
The statement reflects extensive engagement and a shared understanding of how to enable meaningful economic participation. This includes:
- respecting Indigenous Knowledges, rights and cultural authority
- supporting First Nations peoples to explore their own career and economic goals
- recognising the importance of long-term stewardship of Country.
