About this response
The Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee’s report on the inquiry into the Illegal Logging Prohibition Amendment (Strengthening Measures to Prevent Illegal Timber Trade) Bill 2024 [Provisions] (Bill), recommended that the Bill pass through Parliament. The Bill was debated in the Senate and passed in both houses on 9 September 2024. The Committee report includes dissenting recommendations from the Coalition and additional comments from the Australian Greens. The recommendations (including dissenting recommendations and additional comments) were addressed in Parliament on 9 September 2024. Senator the Hon Anthony Chisholm welcomed the Committee’s recommendation to pass the Bill, noted the Coalition’s dissenting recommendation and addressed the Australian Greens’ additional recommendations. A letter to the president of the Senate, enclosing the relevant Hansard transcripts, was provided as the government response and tabled in the Senate on 5 February 2026.
