About this response
On 19 November 2024, Senator Bridget McKenzie presented a private member’s Bill seeking to establish the National Standard for Organic and Bio-Dynamic Produce as the mandatory domestic certification standard for businesses selling or importing organic products in Australia.
On 28 November 2024, the Senate referred the Bill to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee (the Committee) for inquiry.
The Committee’s report was tabled on 11 February 2025 and recommended that the Bill is not passed in its current form, and the government works with stakeholders regarding the need for domestic regulation, including through a scoping exercise led by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. The Committee report includes a dissenting recommendation from the Coalition.
The Government Response was tabled in the Senate on 23 April 2026.
