Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement 2017-22 five-yearly review

A review of the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) is undertaken every five years.
The purpose of the review is to assess progress and outcomes against the commitments in the Tasmanian RFA.

Scoping Agreement

The Tasmanian RFA 2017-22 five-yearly review commenced in December 2022 with the signing of the Scoping Agreement by Senator the Hon. Murray Watt MP and the Hon. Minister Felix Ellis MP. The Scoping Agreement sets out the arrangements agreed by the Tasmanian and Australian governments for undertaking the review.

Outcomes Report

In accordance with the Scoping Agreement, an outcomes report on the Tasmanian RFA, prepared by the Tasmanian and Australian governments was released for public comment in July 2024.

The outcomes report details the extent to which outcomes and objectives of the Tasmanian RFA have been met for the 2017-22 five-year period (using data to June 2021). It can be downloaded from the State Growth Tasmania Website.

Public comment period

As part of the review process, members of the public had an opportunity to provide comment on the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement Outcomes Report 2017 – 2022. The consultation period ran from July 2024 to August 2024.

The Tasmanian Department of State Growth received 18 submissions during the public comments period. Public submissions will be published on the Tasmanian Department of State Growth’s website alongside the independent reviewer’s report.

Independent reviewer’s report

An independent reviewer, Prof. Jerry Vanclay, has been appointed to review the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement Outcomes Report 2017 - 2022, as well as the submissions received during the public comments period.

The reviewer will develop and submit a report to the Tasmanian and Australian governments detailing the five-yearly review findings and recommendations.

The independent review is anticipated to be published in early 2025.

Joint Government Response

The Tasmanian and Australian governments will consider the review report and recommendations and publish a Joint Government Response within 12 months of receiving the Review report.

The release of the Joint Government Response formally concludes the review process.

Extending the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement

Per clause 8 of the Tasmanian RFA, if this review is deemed satisfactory by the Tasmanian and Australian governments, the public release of the Joint Government Response to the review will automatically extend the RFA by five years.
