Purpose
To advise all stakeholders that the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has commenced public consultation on tranche 1 matters in the ASEL 4.0 review.
Key points
- Consultation on tranche 1 matters commenced today (22 May 2025) and will be open for a period of six weeks, closing at 5 pm (AEST) Thursday 3 July 2025.
- Feedback can be provided by visiting Have Your Say
- Tranche 1 matters include penning requirements in registered establishments and pregnancy-related requirements.
- Key proposed changes include:
- weight ranges for animals penned in registered establishments
- removal of ineffective and impractical terms relating to penning requirements in registered establishments
- greater flexibility around methods of pregnancy testing
- clarify the validity period for feeder and slaughter cattle pregnancy tests and allow an extension to this validity period
- extension of validity periods for some breeder cattle pregnancy tests
- removal of repetitive and administrative content from pregnancy-related standards.
- The proposed changes provide increased flexibility around relevant ASEL requirements while maintaining or improving animal health and welfare outcomes. The proposed changes also aim to improve the practicality, readability and clarity of ASEL requirements.
- All feedback received through public consultation will be considered in finalising the updated ASEL (Version 4.0).
Background
- The ASEL 4.0 review addresses priority matters identified by stakeholders relating to the export of livestock by sea and by air.
- Due to the breadth of matters under consideration, the review and consultation will be divided into 3 tranches.
- Feedback is also welcome (now or at any time) on other matters relating to the ASEL. This feedback should be sent to ASELReview@aff.gov.au. Emerging topics will be added to a register and considered in future updates.
