Biosecurity Emergency Management – Evaluation and Lessons Management Guide

Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, June 2017

The Biosecurity Emergency Management – Evaluation and Lessons Management Guide provides guidance on contemporary practices for evaluation and lessons management in the context of Australia’s biosecurity emergency preparedness, response and initial recovery activities. It provides a range of templates that may be used by evaluators when planning, conducting and reporting on biosecurity responses and exercises.

It is intended that this document will have application across all biosecurity sectors and by a range of emergency management organisations, to inform a cycle of continuous improvement. Evaluation is a tool widely used by management to find out how organisations are performing, whether objectives are being met, what areas need improvement and how this might be achieved.

The evaluation and lessons management principles and approaches outlined in this guide are designed to be consistent with those applied by other emergency management sectors.

This guide has been prepared by the Evaluation and Lessons Management Specialist Task Group, established by the National Biosecurity Emergency Preparedness Expert Group and endorsed by the National Biosecurity Committee on 4 April 2017.
