Indigenous Apprenticeships Program

The Indigenous Apprenticeships Program (IAP) is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The program helps people learn new skills and grow a career that supports our communities.

We support greater employment of Indigenous people from all backgrounds, including school leavers, graduates and people looking for a career change.

Applications for the 2026 intake are now open!

What the program offers

The IAP runs for 12 months. You will:

  • work fulltime in an APS3 position with potential to advance to an APS4 after you complete the program.
  • get support to study and complete a Diploma of Government.
  • work with a dedicated team to support Australian communities and industries.

Possible work areas

Depending on availability, you could work in one of the following areas:

  • Compliance: Checking imported goods at our international airports, seaports or mail centres for harmful pests and diseases.
  • Corporate support: Get skilled in IT, finance or human resources, to help us operate effectively.
  • Administration: Manage records and information that help us deliver frontline services.

Working with us

We create export opportunities for Australian farmers, fishers and foresters and help keep Australia safe from harmful pests and diseases. We partner with countries around the world to improve food security, trade and sustainability.

We are looking for people who want to learn, grow and make a real difference. You will be part of work that protects our environment, strengthens our agriculture industries and supports communities across the country. The work you do with us today helps shape Australia’s future.

Program benefits

Career development

Hands-on experience will help you build strong skills, relationships and knowledge in your role. As your career develops, you can apply for scholarships, awards and further training, and you can access mainstream and Indigenous development programs.

Support and networking

You will be supported by a dedicated team and have access to entry level and First Nations networks. You will also grow your skills through internal learning and development activities. A First Nations mentor and buddy will support you and help you settle into your role and workplace.

Benefits and flexibility

Enjoy competitive pay, flexible working arrangements and eligible relocation support. These benefits are designed to support your wellbeing and help you achieve a healthy work-life balance.
