Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area Biosecurity Strategy

The Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area Biosecurity Strategy sets out key biosecurity objectives and priority actions for this unique region.

The strategy was developed in conjunction with local, state and federal governments, traditional owners and island communities who have responsibility for managing biosecurity in the region.

Priorities

  • partnership between all levels of government, community and industry
  • understanding priority pests and how they travel
  • making biosecurity more meaningful to communities
  • raising awareness with local communities and visitors
  • improved response to threats
  • better harnessing of resources in the region

Learn how the strategy was developed

In 2017 government stakeholders committed to developing a Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area Biosecurity Strategy.

To develop this strategy, we worked with:

  • Torres Strait Regional Authority
  • Torres Shire Council
  • Torres Strait Island Regional Council
  • Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council
  • Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries
  • Traditional Owners through Registered Native Title Bodies Corporates

Priority areas identified in the strategy are based on the feedback we received as part of extensive consultation.
