Importers of enoki mushrooms and kava, and brokers acting on behalf of these importers.
Purpose
To advise of changes to the inspection and testing of imported enoki mushrooms, and kava from New Zealand pending registration of amendments to the Imported Food Control Order 2019 in March 2026.
Key points
- We are classifying these foods as risk food in the Imported Food Control Order 2019:
- Enoki mushrooms that are fresh
- Kava products from New Zealand
- This changes the way we inspect and test these foods under the Imported Food Inspection Scheme.
- From 02 March 2026:
- Enoki mushrooms (that are fresh) will be referred for at-border inspection and tested at a rate of 100% until a compliance history is established.
- Tests that will apply: Listeria monocytogenes.
- Enoki mushroom consignments will also be checked to ensure appropriate directions for use are on the label, including statements to the effect that the mushrooms:
- must be cooked before consumption
- must be refrigerated.
- Kava products from New Zealand will be referred for at-border inspection to verify compliance with Australian food standards at a rate of 100% until a compliance history is established.
- Enoki mushrooms (that are fresh) will be referred for at-border inspection and tested at a rate of 100% until a compliance history is established.
Instructions
