Project 47: The National Agricultural Traceability Strategy 2023 to 2033

Overview

On 13 July 2023, the National Agricultural Traceability Strategy 2023 to 2033 (the strategy) was launched by Australian Agriculture Ministers. It aims to provide a nationally coordinated approach to enhancing traceability for biosecurity, trade, food safety and other outcomes.

The strategy was co-designed by Australian government and industry stakeholders. It will support modernising and further strengthening Australia’s tracking and tracing capabilities.

Project Lead: Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

Project 48: National mandatory individual electronic identification for sheep and goats

Overview

Australia has world-leading livestock traceability systems and an ongoing reform agenda ensuring these systems not only continue to meet but surpass future needs. This is key to preserving our biosecurity and enhancing export trade.

In 2022, Australia’s Commonwealth and state and territory Agriculture Ministers committed to work collaboratively with industry on a national approach to Australia’s livestock traceability systems. This included the agreement to introduce a national mandatory eID for sheep and goats.

Project 49: National Livestock Identification System Database Uplift project

Overview

Australia’s livestock traceability arrangements are vital to the ongoing health and success of our agricultural sector. The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) plays an important role in capturing livestock movement information for lifetime traceability. This assists governments and industry to respond to animal disease outbreaks or food safety incidents.

The NLIS Database Uplift is a whole-of-system project benefitting Australia’s red meat and livestock industries. The Australian Government awarded $22.5 million in grant funding to the project.
