Criterion 1: Conservation of biological diversity

Use the links below to access data and information reported for the nine indicators of Criterion 1, noting that Indicator 1.1a is reported across four parts:

Indicator 1.1a Area of forest by forest type and tenure

  • 1.1a.i Forest area by type - updated December 2023
  • 1.1a.ii Forest area by tenure - updated December 2023
  • 1.1a.iii Forest area in Regional Forest Agreement regions - updated December 2023
  • 1.1a.iv Forest area change over time - updated December 2023

Indicator 1.1b Area of forest by growth stage (2018) - to be updated in 2026.

Indicator 1.1c Area of forest in protected area categories (2024) - updated July 2024.

Indicator 1.1d Fragmentation of forest cover (2025) - updated December 2025.

Indicator 1.2a Forest dwelling species for which ecological information is available (2024) - updated October 2024.

Indicator 1.2b The status of forest dwelling species at risk of not maintaining viable breeding populations, as determined by legislation or scientific assessment (2024) - updated October 2024.

Indicator 1.2c Representative species from a range of habitats monitored at scales relevant to regional forest management (2025) - updated December 2025.

Indicator 1.3a Forest associated species at risk from isolation and the loss of genetic variation, and conservation efforts for those species (2024) - updated October 2024.

Indicator 1.3b Native forest and plantations of indigenous timber species which have genetic resource conservation mechanisms in place (2024) - updated October 2024.

This criterion addresses aspects of the conservation of the biological diversity of forests, which is a key part of sustainable forest management. Biodiversity refers to the full range of plants, animals and microorganisms occurring in a given area, the genes they contain and the ecosystems they form.
