Machinery imported to Australia must be free from biosecurity risk material on arrival. Under the Biosecurity Act 2015,machinery that has been brought into Australia and found to be excessively contaminated can be directed for export.
The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has directed a number of consignments of machinery for export in the past as they arrived in an excessively contaminated state. The export of these goods was at the importer’s or owner’s expense. While the department does not charge an export fee, importers/owners should note that they would liable for costs associated with the export process such as demurrage, storing and freight, which can be up to and sometimes over A$50 000.
